What are interactive maps?

The Interactive Maps allow users to view LOJIC data in their home or office, eliminating a trip downtown to find information about a piece of property. These interactive maps are divided into thematic maps roughly emulating sets of information you might find from a particular public office. For example, the Voter Information Map displays information you can get from the Board of Elections if you call or visit them.

The interactive maps have been created using ESRI ArcIMS Internet Map Server software.

How to interact with the maps

The map tools help you interact with the map. The following describes the functions of each tool in the map display:

Zoom Out - zoom out from a location by clicking on a spot in the map or by defining a box on the map.

Go Back To Previous Extent - returns to a previous view.

Pan - pan or move the map around by dragging it.

Help - open the help page.

Instructions on using the Search tab

It is very important to carefully type in the Address, Street Intersection, or Parcel ID in the Search tab frame.

Parcel IDs can have letters in them or leading zeros.  The application is not case sensitive and leading zeros do not need to be entered.  If you would like to zoom to an entire block just enter the block information. If you want to zoom to a specific parcel tax block entries are required but the lot and sublot are not always used.  If a sublot is not used or contains all zeros, the sublot field can be left blank.

Parcel ID Example:

014J00570000

Block field can be entered as 14j

Lot field can be entered as 57

Sublot field can be left blank

Once the Parcel ID has been entered, press the Find Parcel button.  If the application finds a match with the Parcel ID you entered, it will zoom to that parcel.  If the application is unable to locate the Parcel ID or if you only entered a block it will display a list of possible Parcel IDs that are similar to the one you entered. At the top of the list will be a hyperlink stating to "Click here to zoom to the entire block". Either click on the hyperlink or select a Parcel ID from the list to continue.

When entering a street address make sure you have typed in the street direction (if exists), street name, and street type, if you know the house number you can include it into the address.  Do not type in an apartment number.

Street Address Example:  W Liberty St.

or

Street Address Example:  700 W Liberty St.

Numbered street names should not be spelled out, therefore enter 4th Street instead of Fourth Street.

When entering a street intersection all that is required is the street direction, street name and street type for both streets.  A house number is not needed for the street intersection search.

Street Intersection Example:  Street 1: W Liberty St       Street 2: S 7th St

If the exact information is known the application will zoom to that location.  If the application is unable to locate the location, it will give a list of possible streets that are similar to the one you entered

or a list addresses for the street that was entered, titled Locate Results.

The list of locations will be displayed in the lower portion of the Search tab.   The left column of the list will contain a number, that will zoom you to that Parcel ID, street address or street intersection on the map, when clicked on.

Getting Help

Help can be accessed by clicking this button on the map toolbar. It is divided into sections specific to parts of the map viewer.  Some links reference other pages which are opened in a new window while others expand to display more information, for example the Map Toolbar section. Click on this link to view more information about how to use these tools to nagivate and interact with the map.

Understanding the scale bar

The scale in the lower right corner of the map window indicates the relative distance on the map.  As you zoom in and out in the map window, the scale bar will stay the same length, while the text will change to reflect the corresponding measurement in the map window.

Information about the data on the maps or metadata

Knowing how accurate and current the data in the maps is essential to clearly understand the maps. Information about the data, or metadata, like its creation date and how often it is updated can be found by clicking on the link above.

***NOTE*** You may experience a problem viewing the metadata if you are using Internet Explorer and you are not using Adobe Acrobat Version 4.0 or higher. You may download the latest version of Acrobat Reader from the Adobe.com web site

How to send a comment

The Comment tab will display a short form that can be filled out to send comments or suggestions.  You might be having problems with interactive map not working or not printing properly, or you might have a suggestion on how we can make it more user friendly, or you might like it just how it is and want to say great job, all of these are excellent reasons to utilize the Comment tab.  The only requirement for using this form is that all of the fields must be filled in except Organization.

Printing a map

After zooming to the location that you want to display, click the Print tool located on the toolbar on the left side of the window.  This will cause a print form to open in a new window.  The enter a map title up to 20 characters long. After clicking the Print button a print layout will be generated of your map.  You can then use the File/Print menu item to set the printer properties and to send the layout to the printer. When you print, make sure you set the paper orientation for your printer.

Some Properties to Check Before Printing

  • Enable your browser cache (temporary internet files) and make sure it is at least 1MB in size.
  • Make sure your browser can check cache automatically. Refer to your browser help for instructions
  • Set the printer option to landscape mode.
  • In your browser Page Setup make sure all your printer margins are no larger than 0.4 to accommodate the map layout size (9.75"x7.2").

Nortons Users

LOJIC is aware that Nortons Internet Security users are having problems printing from the interactive maps. LOJIC has identified the problem to deal with the Nortons add and popup capabilities. When either of these options are enabled the LOJIC print button will not work correctly or is missing all together. To fix the problem, follow the steps exactly from Symantec's support page to allow adds and popups from "www.lojic.org". Be sure to allow both adds and popups as the two are handled differently. PVA Map users, may have to disable Nortons altogether to allow printing.

Nortons has an auto-update feature that installs updates from the Symantec's website automatically through an internet connection. If you experience a problem when there was not one the previous day, a Nortons update has most likely occurred and caused the problem.
