2006 GIS Visioning Workshop

On March 9-10, 2006, LOJIC conducted a two-day GIS Visioning Workshop designed to stimulate discussion and exchange of ideas on the future direction of the community’s LOJIC GIS. The GIS Visioning Workshop was facilitated by ESRI-St. Louis Regional Manager, Stephen Kinzy and Account Manager, Don Homan. Workshop participation was by invitation and included LOJIC Policy Committee members, more than 20 local agency administrators and several key GIS technical staff. Representatives from the local transit authority (TARC), Jefferson County Public Schools and the Louisville Gas & Electric Company were invited and participated in the workshop.

Day one of the GIS Visioning Workshop included presentations on “Performance Based GIS” and a multitude of LOJIC applications, nominal group exercises to define and prioritize local application requirements, and a “homework assignment” for each participant to draft a vision statement for LOJIC.

Day two of the workshop included the consensus definition of a formal vision statement for LOJIC, a presentation and discussion on GIS database and application design processes. Participants assembled into small groups for application design sessions and team presentations. This exercise was followed with a presentation and discussion of successful GIS implementation strategies with emphasis on workgroup, departmental and enterprise implementation requirements. Workshop participants actively discussed and prioritized future needs along with obstacles to and opportunities for successful future growth and development of the LOJIC GIS.

The discussions, findings and consensus priorities from the GIS Visioning Workshop will provide an important baseline for developing a formal LOJIC GIS Strategic Plan during the fourth quarter of 2006.
