This past February LOJIC released an on-line survey to give our many GIS users the opportunity to comment on their particular uses of GIS technology and their needs for the future. The survey was intended to serve as important background information for strategic planning on how our community should make better use of its appreciable investment in GIS technology and how we, as core GIS support staff, can better meet the needs of our LOJIC partner agencies.
Our survey was open from February 6th through the 20th and consisted of 24 questions designed and administered by LOJIC technical staff to solicit user feedback on three broad categories: 1) background information, level of LOJIC knowledge and usage, 2) experiences and interactions with LOJIC staff, and 3) future needs and vision for the future of LOJIC. The survey was open to LOJIC partner agencies and licensees, and included Hansen/MIDAS users as well. Responses were completely anonymous to encourage honest, critical feedback. LOJIC technical staff did not respond to the survey.
A total of 231 users - an estimated two-thirds of all LOJIC users - responded to major portions of the survey. This rate of response far exceeded our expectations and indicated the importance of GIS to many mission-critical business processes throughout our community. Response rates varied across question topics. Nearly all respondents answered the first 12 questions that were more close-ended and dealt with general information such as employer, software and data usage, level of user training, work experience, usage frequency and purpose, and ratings of LOJIC staff performance. Response rates were much lower for the second 12 questions that allowed for more open-ended feedback and comments on issues such as unfavorable support experiences, LOJIC strengths and weaknesses, specific user needs, and statements on future direction. Overall, survey responses were substantive and thoughtful, and reflected respondents’ serious consideration of each issue.

Summaries of single-answer and multi-answer matrix responses (Questions 1 – 12) are presented in bar-charts or tables followed by a few interpretational comments. Responses to the open-ended questions (Questions 13 – 24) are presented in summary statements of similar or particularly noteworthy comments.
